Data Clarity Starts with the Right Questions

29.08.25 10:58 AM

When it comes to data, most organisations already have plenty of numbers, reports and dashboards. But the real question is: are you asking the right questions?

At Kestrel IQ, we believe clarity starts before the analysis, before the dashboards and even before the reports. It starts with knowing where you are, what matters most and which questions will unlock the biggest value.

If you’ve ever felt like your team spends more time debating numbers than deciding what to do next, you’re not alone. Data without clarity can slow you down. With clarity, conversations shift from confusion to action and decisions are made with confidence. That’s why we created the Data Clarity Self-Assessment.  It's a simple pause that helps you discover where you stand and identify which questions will unlock the most value.

Why the Right Questions Matter

Asking the right questions changes the way organisations see and use their data. It turns information from something overwhelming into something that creates focus, alignment and momentum. Here’s how the shift plays out in practice:

From Noise to Clear Notes
When there is too much information, it can feel noisy and overwhelming, like everyone playing at once without a conductor. The right questions act like sheet music, bringing structure and focus. Instead of random sounds, you begin to hear clear notes that make sense and guide you forward.

Creating Alignment
Without clarity, meetings can spiral into disagreements about the numbers. When everyone is guided by the same questions, teams align around a single version of the truth and move forward together.

Driving Confident Action
Clarity accelerates decision-making. Leaders spend less time debating and more time acting, knowing their choices are backed by reliable insight and supported by stronger collaboration across teams.

Recent Industry Insight

According to an article in The Times (Tom Howard, 27 August 2025), nearly half of FTSE 100 companies, including HSBC and Unilever, have had to restate key net-zero emissions metrics after identifying errors and inconsistencies in their data reporting.

Steve Farrell, Head of Sustainability Assurance at Deloitte UK, highlighted why this matters:

What’s really important is how they’re monitoring those [net-zero targets] because there are decisions that will be taken [based on companies’ ESG data]. Consider things like sustainability-linked loans: the interest rate that’s attributable to some of those products actually depends on what [emissions have] been produced and what’s been reported.”

Far from being a failure, this pause allowed organisations to identify what really mattered, correct errors, and rebuild confidence in their reporting. As Farrell also noted, these restatements are a positive sign of improving data practices and stronger governance.  It’s a clear reminder; without clarity, even the biggest companies can lose their way. But with clarity, they can realign, rebuild trust, and move forward with focus.

Partnering with You at Every Stage

Organisations evolve by seeking different kinds of clarity. Early on, the focus may be on understanding and organising data. As maturity grows, the challenge shifts to creating alignment & building trust in reporting. Eventually, attention turns to using insight for growth, innovation & long-term value.

Wherever you are on this path, we work alongside you to make the next step clearer. Our approach is practical and respectful, designed to simplify complexity and build the confidence to act with purpose.

With that in mind, here are three practical tips to help you start asking the right questions of your data today.

3 Tips to Improve Data Clarity

#1 - Begin with Clarity of Purpose

Clarity starts with knowing why. Instead of jumping straight into numbers, anchor your questions in the outcomes you want to achieve. Whether it’s building trust in reporting, improving efficiency, or driving growth, clarity of purpose ensures data serves strategy, not the other way around.
Ask yourself:“What outcome are we trying to achieve?”

#2 - Align Your Team Around What Matters

Not every number deserves your attention. Activity metrics may look impressive, but they rarely change the conversation. Clarity comes from focusing on measures that connect directly to decisions and outcomes, the ones that move your organisation forward.
Ask yourself:“If this number changes, would we act differently?”

#3 - Always Look Ahead

The most powerful insights don’t just explain the past, they shape the future. With clarity, data becomes a springboard for action, helping leaders move beyond reporting to progress, and act with confidence and purpose.

Ask yourself:“What should we do next?”
